a_esl57_mod_3 komprimiertThe QUAD ESL57, the original. Peter Walker caused worldwide excitement in 1955 when he described his electrostatic loudspeaker in the professional journal Wireless World. Two years later, the QUAD ESL57 was ready for production. It has retained its original characteristic shape, often indentified by people as timelessly British. the ESL57 was produced completly unchanged until the mid 80s. At that point the factory wanted to discontinue its production and introduce a successor, the ESL63, which they determined to be an improvement in quality over the original design. Worldwide, many ESL57 fans disagreed and soon the original model was in high demand and traded at collector`s prices.       As this was not the intention of Peter Walker, the ESL57 was reintroduced. It is once more available not only with black but with aluminium, white, beige, bronze and cooper (left to right) colored grills. And siderails can be made of beech, oak, american walnut, teak and wenge (left to right).

9_ESL_63The QUAD ESL63, the stereo professional. The QUAD Electrostat was created in the time of monaural sound recording. Despite this, the ESL was ahead of its time when stereophonic sound was introduced at the end of the 50s. The speaker copes with the demands of stereo tones without any problems. However, some listeners, recording professionals especially, expressed the desire for a larger stereo image. since it is a prime concern of recording engineers to ensure faithful representation of the original artist`s performance, it is understandable why they would want to have the perfect design. Providing a meaningful improvement to an already exceptional design proved far more difficult than imagined. Eighteen years -1963 to 1981- were required to develope a successor to the ESL57. One cannot ignor the lawes af physics and within the confines of modern listening rooms, the resulting ESL63 sounds different, but strives to sound exponentially better. The two designs excist as complimentary partners. And what is your favourite cloth clolor: anthracite 12; beige 28; brown 18, carmine red 29; grey 14; light grey 16; white 11; orange 22 (left to right) and of course black.

Thank you for making them. They made a wonderful 50th birthday present. I never could understand how QUAD UK could have stopped making a speaker that sounds so wonderful. To find out that they are still being made by QUAD Musikwiedergabe made the world make more sense. To receive a brand new pair of QUAD ESL57`s is like a dream come true. David Besler, Canada

7_LE1NEUThe BRAUN LE 1, in the Bauhaus style. In the late 50s, students at the Ulm university created modern designs for radio sets in cooperation with the electric equipment manufacturer BRAUN. the design exercise could be practical, rational, bright, light or many other concepts. One of the most important professors at the university, product designer and architect Dieter Rams, proved his extraordinary abilities by creating the BRAUN LE 1 loudspeaker.
Only an ambitious minority of progessive art lovers recognized such unique design objects. this might be the reason that only approximately 500 pairs of the LE 1 were built. Outrageous prices have since been paid for the few well preserved LE 1s. No other than Dieter Rams himself has granted permission to QUAD Musikwiedergabe GmbH to produce the LE 1 again. Of course, an absolute necessity for this was the availability of new original QUAD transducer elements.

P1030397The ESL63 & 57 QA electrostatic speaker. And why are todays ESL`s named as “QA” models?

It was not enough to understand Peter Walkers philosophy. To get a contemporary version of the famous ESL63 & 57 ready to work, a lot of labor was needed. Therefore a new department was established, named QUAD atelier. It has the task to join all the importened components of the original to create new speakers. We spend a new frame, which is far more rigid. and we did some further modifikations. Today each ESL63 & 57 QA is made under the ideals of Peter Walker. To say it in short words: “Each ESL63 & 57 QA will reproduce a Stradivari close to the original sound”.
